how to know s4 is factory unlocked

i have bought an s4 today from a friend, it does not seem to be rooted, tried several sim cards and they are working ok, is it safe to upgrade to 4.4.2 as the device comes with 4.3 and OTA update does not work ( says last updates already installed ) or they is a risk the device may lock after upgrade ?!?!
